michael spencer + rest in the peace of Jesus

Michael Spencer, aka the Internet Monk, passed away this evening after what seemed an all too short battle with cancer. Michael was my friend. We weren’t super close, but we did have a real friendship. I’m grateful I got to know him for the last couple of years. I’m thankful for his support. The ministry he did through writing on his blog and on his famous podcast, were a great help and encouragement to many, many people. He will certainly be missed. Please pray for his wife, Denise, as well as his daughter, Noel and son Clay and their spouses.

That’s a photo of me and Michael in front of St. Peter’s Catholic church here in Lexington back in ’08. He and Denise and I went to Mass together that day and then we ate lunch at Ramsey’s downtown. We saw each other a few more times in person, but mostly we e-mailed or communicated through blogs. I was able to pray for him with my friends Peter Matthews and Bryan Sherwood, when he was in the UK hospital early on in this thing. I’m glad we were able to do that.

The last time I saw him, he and Denise had come in to a daily Mass at Christ the King, and I happened to be there with my oldest daughter that day. We talked briefly. I’m sure we’ll talk again someday. I trust that he is now being fully enveloped in the Life of God in Christ in a way we can barely imagine.

For now, I’ll just ask for your prayers for us, Michael, now that you know you can do that.
